I have driven by this restaurant for the past 10 years and have never gone in, until today! My husband, son and I were looking for a new breakfast spot and decided on a whim to try Coffee Cup. We are all glad we did! After ordering, my husband started debating on ordering some more food because he was worried about the low prices assuming there wouldn't be much food. Thankfully we didn't because our food arrived (easily under 10 minutes) on huge plates that were filled to the brim with delicious food! The french toast, eggs, hash browns, toast, ham and sausage was amazing! The hot chocolate was particularly delicious and tastes homemade. We cannot wait to go back and try lunch there!! The only downside was our 3 year old kept wondering where the paper and crayons were lol and we had to pool our cash since they don't accept cards.

My husband has been wanting to try this place forever. Anyone who knows me well, knows I LOVE breakfast. I don't know why I didn't try this place sooner. Loved the: Steak Fries- these are getting harder to find these days. Chicken and Dumpling Soup- pretty darn good. Haven't had dumplings in a long time. Ranch Breakfast- a huge amount of everything! Hashbrowns, bacon which was a welcome surprise, toast and eggs. For the price you can't go wrong. Will defintely be back for one heck of a hearty breakfast..

Fantastic food at a great price, the servings are huge and I guarantee will fill you up. The pancakes are ginormous and the omelets are as well.

This is my place for breakfast. Fair prices and LARGE portions means that you will leave with a fat wallet, fat stomach, and leftovers. Unless you have a bottomless pit for a stomach you will always bring out leftovers. The interior is modest and reminiscent of a small town place but once again if the food is great and the place is clean I really don't mind. It makes me feel like back home anyways! The wait staff are amazing and go out of their way every time to make sure you have a full cup of coffee and that your food is what you were expecting. If you are on Rice street and really craving some decent breakfast food skip the Perkins and go here instead!

For a little whole in the wall diner this place is worth trying. I came here one early Sunday morning with my fiancé, mom and niece for breakfast. The portions are big enough for two people in my opinion. They don't skimp on the bacon or the hash browns. No measly 2 or 3 pieces of bacon here try like six pieces! I personally don't eat meat but hey that's still excites me. The waitress we had was sweet and very attentive. If you like big pancakes, lots of bacons and mounds of hash browns this place is for you.

So it's a early Saturday morning and my friends and I needed a place to eat from a fun night out. Got there at 5 am and this sweet old lady (wish I had gotten her name) greeted us and sat us down. Got us our water, did the whole service routine. With our first time being there, I asked her what's the signature dish. She said I would not be disappointed in the Ranch Breakfast. So 4 of us 6 went with the Ranch Breakfast. The order came super quick. I'm a big story teller and they got that dish out before midway through my story. PORTION WAS HUGE!!! If I can't make it to Uptowners on Grand and Lexington, I'm hitting this spot!!! Meal was super good!!! My party of 6 enjoy our meal. I wish we got our servers name. She's an old lady, skinny, with a sweet little voice like a movie screen grandma. She was super friendly and took great care of us. A party of 6 drunks and she held high standards. Joked with us, checked in on us, refilled our water, the whole sha bang. The only knock off I had would be that they don't accept any card payments. But food and service were beyond great.

Our "go to dive" when we roll out of bed & don't feel like getting dressed up for breakfast. Not the best coffee but I appreciate the nice staff, prompt refills & service. I prefer to support Mom & Pop's over chains. Hubby & I usually share the Gyro Omelet & French Toast w/ the kids. Huge portions, always leftovers. Be hungry or beware of pancakes the size of a medium pizza lol

In business since 1952, The Coffee Cup is a Rice St neighborhood icon. You can tell that its a special place when you arrive. It's very busy and staff have ongoing banter with regular customers. Since it was my first visit, I ordered the highly-recommended Gyro Omelette. It was HUGE (3 eggs) and came with a generous portion of hash browns and toast. While the restaurant is special, I didn't find anything special about my breakfast. The omelette was good. Thin egg, stuffed with a hearty later of gyro meat. However, the toast was limp, the hashbrowns were unseasoned, the coffee was watery. I ate the whole omelette, but barely touched the rest. However, this review is based on a single visit. The menu has a lot of interesting offerings -- such as fried chicken-- that could be worthy of high ratings. If I was a neighborhood local, I'd definitely explore the menu in more detail. However, as someone who made the journey for breakfast, It'll probably explore a handful of other notable twin city diners before returning.

Coffee Cup was a great example of a diner done right. After a cheery greeting, we sat at the counter because it was fairly open (and we'd be nearer the coffee). I was in the mood for a big american breakfast. The ranch breakfast seemed to fit the bill. My wife and I both ordered it. I got a side of jalapeños and onions. Everything seemed bigger than I expected. Even the eggs appeared to be large. I had 5 or 6 strips of bacon. The side of peppers and onions filled a 6" plate. Nice fresh peppers with plenty of zing sauted with a white onion. The hash browns were well prepared and delivered in mind boggling proportions. Our server was great and we never lacked for coffee. I tapped out long before the hash browns ended, a full and happy customer.

Breakfast is the meal to have here and be sure to come hungry! The portions are enough to feed the biggest appetite. I have never finished the giant pile of hash browns that came with my omelet yet. For lunch in the winter on Fridays they have a chicken dumpling soup that is just incredible. Its worth a drive sliding through the snow just for that. the staff is wonderful and they are running all the time making things perfect for everyone. Everyone is dressed casual so come as you are. You will like eating here

Good food, huge portions (you can take your leftovers and have yet another great meal later in the day), all the coffee refills you'd like, friendly and attentive waitresses and great prices. Overall great experience, definitely check it out!

Portions are huge. Its a great place if your a college kid or just really hungry. Kids friendly. But if you want lots of flavor in ur breakfast, its not the place for you.

It would be a five star if the staff working there was a little more personable. The dishes are good and the dishes are always heaping with food!

Ok so we were in the neighborhood and were hungry for lunch on a Saturday. I yelped places close to where we were and we read about the Coffee cup. GREAT chicken dumpling soup! Omg homemade and so good! My husband had an egg and cheese sandwich and I had the BLT. All around delicious! Love this place!!

Like other reviewers, I've lived in the neighborhood for years and finally decided to duck in and get breakfast. I got the Ranch breakfast, which promised 2 eggs, hash browns, toast, and choice of meat (bacon, sausage, etc). What I got was all of that in the form of a generous pile of food on a plate that could barely contain it. About half of that was hash browns. That was a lot of hash browns. I think they gave me all of the hash browns. They're decent hash browns, I guess. They were kinda light, in a good way. If you like a lot of hash browns, then seriously dude, give this place your undivided attention. There's no way that was two eggs. I think they gave me four eggs. Generous! The atmosphere is reminiscent of a small-town Main Street diner. Almost out of place in the middle of St Paul like it is. And I mean that in a good way. If you live in the Twin Cities and want to be reminded of your favorite diner in Ely or Bemidji or whatever, you will feel right at home here. The servers are really friendly and appear to be working hard. I was there at around 12:30pm on a Sunday and it was really busy, but my order came swiftly. CAVEAT #1: The hours are 5am to 3pm 7 days a week. CAVEAT #2: They do not accept credit cards. Cash or check only. They have an ATM. I'll be back.

This place makes me feel like I am in a small town in the middle of the city. The food is so good and so inexpensive. I go as often as I can. Oh and for a small independent business that clearly hasn't been updated in a very long time it's surprisingly clean.

Food was terrific and the service was great. Cheap prices for the portions served. Sadly, I had to hang my head in embarrassment and get a box for the remaining food on my plate, which if eaten, would have made my stomach angry. Slight edge over Al's.

If you ever need 4 plate fulls of a delicious honest hot breakfast for less than 8 bucks this is your place. Good pancakes, not quite up to Al's standards but still pretty good. Only takes cash. Grab a seat at the bar, read the paper and grunt in agreement with the old guy down at the end.

LOVE the Coffee Cup! Awesome food and hash browns to die for, which are my favorite. The only reason I am giving them 4 starts instead of 5 is because they did away with the hot beef sandwich! I would drive across town just for that! Can't imagine why they would dismiss a favorite. Consider bringing it back!!

We were looking for a late morning breakfast and hotel staff suggested the Coffee Cup. We were not disappointed. Humongous portions at surprisingly low prices. Food was served immediately as it came up at the window and coffee was kept full and hot. Staff was friendly and welcoming. Glad we decided to visit!

I can't believe I have lived here over a year and never bothered to eat at this little hole in the wall diner that I have literally driven by well over 500 times. This morning, for whatever reason my daughter suggested we try it after she had read some good reviews on yelp. We gave it a whirl.. Its been over twelve hours and i still can't get the pancakes out of my mind. I did not have them but my daughter did and they were the best pancakes I have ever had. The flavor and texture is a little different, not sure, whats in them, but they are great. I had a typical greasy spoon diner breakfast, eggs, toast, bacon, and hash browns. I have never had this much bacon at restaurant ever. We both had perfectly cooked crispy bacon and I think I won out with seven pieces, she had six. My eggs were perfectly cooked, has browns crispy, and it all came to the table in less than ten minutes piping hot. Can it get any better than this? We were promptly greeted when entering, waitress was super super nice, friendly, and kept the coffee filled. Why not five stars? The coffee could be better, they don't take credit cards, and on the menu they state everyone has to buy a beverage which I find to be a little odd, (not sure they enforce this rule, however). This most definitely will be at the top of my list when craving good home cooked food and pancakes!

It takes approximately 5 minutes to get from our garage to the door of the Coffee Cup. So, sure, we go somewhat frequently because it's close. That being said, we also really, really enjoy the food. It's a typical seat-yourself, old-school café with good food (and a LOT of it!); friendly, efficient wait staff; cooks who don't mess around and get you your meal quickly; and great greasy-spoon ambience. Whenever we're at the Coffee Cup, we see at least someone we've seen in there before...it's definitely a place people keep coming back to. Of course, we're some of those people -- we usually have the same server and she always recognizes us -- and have been eating breakfast there the entire time we've been together (it was the first place I wanted to tell Husband -- then Boyfriend -- "I love you" :) Awww...thanks, Coffee Cup! Keep in mind this place doesn't accept credit cards -- it's check or cash only -- but they also have an ATM underneath the TV so no biggie. Bon appetit!

I love the coffee cup because they serve gyro for breakfast. You also get about 2 pounds of hash browns with your meal. Quick and friendly service too.

I was here last weekend and ordered the number 3. Eggs, toast, and choice of meat. Of course I chose bacon. The order came out lightning fast, literally in about 5-6 minutes. This time I counted the bacon-9 pieces. My brother only got 8; I win.

One of the dining experiences I miss out East is the Greek diner. Greeks have a magic touch when it comes to making a restaurant successful. A good location, and I highly recommend stopping by if you know you'll be in the area. My favorite is the hot beef sandwich. Made the way I always remember them, very tender beef smothered in homemade gravy. Not for the calorie faint of heart. Breakfasts are average, and the coffee is sub par. The bluest of the blue collar crowd. I'd love to see places like this on a more upscale level, where you get a mixed bag of customers. Now that I remember they are often 24 hour joints, and the midnight shifts were really crazy. But that was the disco days and at 4AM you hoped you and your girlfriends picked up some guys by that time to get a breakfast out of them.

I have drove past this place sense 1981 and never stop in ? Today was my first stop and I wish I had stopped sooner, I got the Steak and Egg's and made the mistake of getting a cake on the side, when the food came it looked like I could have feed a family of 4 the pancake was as big as a pizza, I was shocked how good it was, I couldn't even eat half of the monster. My Steaks was done perfect, yes i said steaks and they tasted really fresh and full of favor, the hash-browns " A huge" Pile were just right, I think I had 4 slices of toast and got a pile of Bacon I didn't even order. Will I be back ? You bet , but I won't be ordering so much! Bang for the buck you just can't get any better

Best breakfast you can imagine if you had a late night out the previous evening. Ranch breakfast is a standby, but I often go with the Gyro Omelet with extra crispy hashbrowns. If you are feeling ambitious, get the hash browns "Leah" style with onions, jalapenos and cheese. They are a meal in themselves. Great service and super fast food. Go there now!

Great breakfast spot. Solid greasy spoon category... Went last Saturday AM with my family and ordered the basics ham&cheese omlette myself which is enormous. Balance of the family loves the pancakes, typically hot and fresh right to the table asap. Always had great luck with the service and prices are real reasonable...

Friendly staff, great atmosphere with cute small town diner feel. Wish I could speak more on the food, but I would go back just for the above mentioned. This place would be phenomenal if the coffee had flavor, since your cup is always kept full with a smile to boot. I got a mound of perfectly cooked hashbrowns, right amount crispy to creamy ratio, but seemed like too much grease or old grease, same with the eggs. Definitely could use some homemade or better quality bread, because they know how to toast and butter it just right. Bacon was piled on, everything cooked to perfection without request, so it was a bummer it lacked flavor or overpowered with grease.

Could the food BE any faster? I love CC! It's quick and friendly diner, that is always on. Where else can you go where you only get the limited menu, but you order something off the regular menu, and the kind servers ask if you'd like to add cheese to that? At the Coffee Cup! My favorite meal at the Coffee Cup - sausage and egg sandwich on an English muffin with cheese and a tomato juice. The food comes out in the literally 7 mins. The breakfast sandwich has 2 eggs and big sausage patty and nice melted cheese on a toasty English muffin. If I'm hungover, I throw in a side of fries. Don't normally get them because the portion is so big! Sometimes if I'm super hungry, I even get 1 pancake. That's all I can handle because it's about the size of a medium pizza - no kidding! My dining companion typically has the ranch breakfast with bacon and when it came out last weekend, there were 9 pieces of bacon! 9! Do they have their own pig farm back there?!?!?! The service quick, food hot, and check reasonable. The food is so fast, I imagine the kitchen to have a whole griddle of hash browns cooking away all morning. Remember to bring cash or a check - no cards accepted.
